Black metal and death metal have been the two genres with the most albums released every single year since about 1998, according to the metal archives. Surprisingly, extreme metal makes up a huge portion of the active metal community, despite it being so abrasive and the bands not receiving huge amounts of sales or streams. But that makes sense, given the nature of the music. It’s still a very small fanbase compared to a lot of genres however. If you subtract all those fans out you pretty much get r/metal, a sub that has over a million subscribers. Within many metal insider communities, black/death are easily the two largest genres. Prog Metal itself is host to what could be identified the other major contemporary metal insider communities. The public is often quite fan of prog metal (Hell Floor is part of Lucassen"s regular, so if you want a blind guardian/Nightwish/Epica/dream theater/Devin Towsend/the gathering/. Nightwish and Saturnian don't have much audience crossover. Symphoblack was quite big at one point, and yeah, some people on r/metal and other communities may like it when it presents like that - but it's not representative of Symphonic Metal proper. Symphonic Death isn't that popular or huge a fusion. Well there is symphonic metal is often crossed with other genre, such as black or death metal.
